On a recent Saturday, more than 60 volunteers assisted Larimer County Department of Natural Resources with building a new trail at Devil’s Backbone Open Space.
With support from Larimer County staff, the volunteers constructed roughly 1,000 feet of trail, part of the new Hidden Valley Trail coming to the open space west of Loveland, Colorado.
Volunteers for the project consisted of groups from Larimer County, Overland Mountain Bike Club, Colorado Addicted Trail builders Society (C.A.T.S.), Team B.O.B. (Babes on Bikes) and Arizona State University Alumni Northern Colorado Club.
After Saturday’s project, about half of the 1.8-mile Hidden Valley Trail remains to be built. Scheduled to open in May, the Hidden Valley Trail will be a multi-use trail for mountain bikers and equestrians. It will run roughly from the Devil’s Backbone Trailhead to the north end of the Wild Loop Trail, which will become hiking only.
The project was the first in a series of special volunteer opportunities organized for the 20th anniversary of the Help Preserve Open Spaces sales tax in 2016. These volunteer opportunities give the citizens of Larimer County a chance to get outdoors and get their hands dirty in support of lands conserved through the tax.
