Some battles you lose and some you win. When it comes to figuring out the battle you are going to have each year farming, you never know. Tigges Farm (see ad – this issue) has seen seasons of grasshopper invasion. We have had micro-bursts completely break plants in half or hail storms strip the plants to sticks. Mice like to dig up seeds and eat them or rabbits and deer leave tooth marks on the pumpkins they have nibbled on. We have had weeds take over (like last year and looks like this year again with all the rain). The rain is good for the crops but the weeds love it too!
Some summers have been so hot, the blossoms that become the fruit, have burnt to a crisp so we pray they will blossom again. So why do farmers do it? It is not a 9 to 5 job. It is a dawn to dusk job! It is not 5 days a week. It is every day of the week during the growing season.
Farmers don’t put up their feet and eat bonbon’s the rest of the year or vacation on an island. They do equipment repairs, prepare the soil, order seeds and supplies, figure out finances as there will be no income for 9 months, just expenses. That is to name just a few of the things “off season.” Yes, there is always the question, “Should we keep doing it?” Lots of things play into that decision. Is our age making it difficult to continue?
Is there another generation to take over the farm? As the Bible says, “To everything there is a season….” So be it with
farming and farmers every year as they grapple with “Is this still the season?” Like one day at a time, farmers take one year at a time. Come see us! TIGGES FARM 12404 CR 64 1/2, in Greeley.
