Weld County Area Agency on Aging staff stand with the board of commissioners. To honor the meaningful contributions of older adults and reaffirm Weld County’s commitment to supporting healthy, independent aging, the board of commissioners has proclaimed May 2026 as Older Americans Month. This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” emphasizes the importance of personal advocacy — encouraging older adults to take an active role in their well-being through preventive care and informed decision-making.
“The Weld County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) provides numerous avenues for older Americans to connect with resources, support, and ways to remain active and engaged in their communities so they can continue to age in place,” said Tami Grant, Weld County Department of Human Services (DHS) Deputy Director.
In 2025, AAA guided 2,377 participants through Weld Aging Well classes — evidence-based programs that support balance, chronic disease management, fall prevention, and overall well-being, and served 81,000 meals through Friendly Fork, a congregate meal program at 22 sites throughout Weld County, with an additional 20,000 meals delivered directly to homes through a partnership with Meals on Wheels of Greeley and Weld County.
“These outcomes are possible because of the dedication of the DHS team and the invaluable partnerships across our community,” Grant said. “Together, we ensure older adults can age with dignity, safety, and choice in the homes and communities that they love.”
In addition to community-based services, AAA supports older adults living at home as well as family caregivers. Nearly 6,000 hours of homemaker and personal care services were provided to help older adults maintain independence in their homes, and over 5,000 hours of respite care were delivered to ensure family members caring for their loved ones had time to rest and recharge in 2025.
“Older adults are great sources of wisdom, history, and just a fount of experience,” said Scott James, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “The work that DHS does, from providing healthy meals, wellness classes, and opportunities for older adults to connect, are very much appreciated.”
Older Americans Month serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting older adults in maintaining health, independence, and connection.
