Pet Fact: One in three pet owners will need veterinary care and will spend over $1,000 on pet medical services this year in the U.S. Pets can be costly and most need medical care as they age over eight years old, depending on their breed. However like people, there is pet insurance and pet wellness plans. They vary by service, but the more affordable plans are wellness plans. There are many pet insurance plans, but check on their individual plans offered by different veterinarians as many plans vary by their services and co-pays.
There are several pet welless plans available across the Colorado front range for pet owners wanting or needing regular maintenance services. These plans are excellent for young or aging pets. These plans are not insurance plans, which have different limitations and co-pays much like people health insurance plans compared to wellness plans, which promote preventative methods besides providing medical assistance.
Banfield Hospital (located in PetsMart stores) offers several Optimum Wellness Plans from young pets to aging pets with basic, preventative or special care plans. Many pet owners use them and can attest to their affordable plans and services. Banfield Hospitals started service in 1955 and have seen over 88 thousand dogs and 17 thousand cats alone in 2012 at their many Colorado hospitals.
Their wellness pet services average range in price from $25 to $33 for a single cat or $25 to $41 for a single dog plus a one time membership of $40.
Their basic plans include 2x physical exams, vaccines, blood diagnostic testing, fecal exams and deworming, and unlimited office visits. Their adult plans ican include teeth cleaning, which should be done annually on most pets. Special care plans for dogs include x-rays and ECGs and eye pressure tests. All Banfield wellness plans offer varying discounts on additonal services and prescriptions.
