WindSong Memory Care Opens in November

On November 8, Dr. Cameron Camp, an internationally-known research scientist in the field of gerontology, will be in Fort Collins to train the staff of WindSong Memory Care at Rock Creek in the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle® approach to dementia care.

Dr. Cameron Camp

Dr. Camp saw commonalities between Maria Montessori’s method of teaching children and his research in dementia intervention. His research has shown that a retooling of Montessori’s concepts can benefit people in all stages of their lives, even those with serious cognitive impairment.

In the 25 years since his research began, Dr. Camp has lectured and trained in Asia, Australia, Europe, and throughout North America. His writings have been translated into many different languages. He recently served as President of the Division of Adult Development and Aging of the American Psychological Association.

The practical application of Dr. Camp’s principles affirms that persons with dementia can be led by building experiences and external cues to help them “remember” in a way. Even new learning can occur over time. Through the use of the Montessori methods, individuals with dementia are able to retain their dignity and independence.

Through the use of the Montessori methods, WindSong will work to create a community that is centered on residents’ needs and previous lifestyles. They will capitalize on each individual’s strengths, and be active participants in their own lives. Rather than negatively restricting what dementia residents can do, WindSong staff will seek for their residents the highest level of independence possible.

WindSong presents a free session, open to the public with Dr. Camp on November 8th at 6:30pm located at the Lincoln Center at 417 W Magnolia Street, Fort Collins. Refreshments will be served. RSVP at (970) 372-5838 or hsmith@windsongmemorycare.com/.
