Forty-Eight Years Later

Mary Margaret Cox is a native Coloradan, born in Fort Lupton, moved with her family to Greeley, a Greeley High School and UNC graduate. Mary Margaret thought about becoming a teacher. Her destiny was in another direction.

Mary Margaret has three grown sons. She recalls an old barn requiring plenty of remodeling was home for several years there they found abundant joy and love of family.

In 1970, Mary Margaret founded Meals on Wheels; a program in Loveland she heard about which she visited, acquainted herself with their program and decided such a program would benefit Weld County folks. Mary Margaret got underway April Fools’ Day 1970 serving 24 meals with the able help of 8 volunteers and in co-operation with Good-Sam Bonell in Greeley which was home for Meals on Wheels for 33 years before moving to its present 2131 9th Street, Greeley location. Their present home was a generous donation given by The Schlessman Family of Greeley.

Over the years, Meals on Wheels has experienced remarkable growth; now serving 300 meals a day; assisted by 75 volunteers making nourishing meal deliveries to folks in need.

Mary Margaret’s passion to serve others, her dedication and tireless efforts significantly contributed to guiding Meals on Wheels to the impressive level of success it now enjoys. For this she is quick to acknowledge family & friends’ encouragement, community support, and exceptional work done by volunteers over the years.

Forty-eight years later, Mary Margaret has decided to retire, move on to more fully enjoy her family, sleep later than 3:30 a.m. – the time she used to get up for Meals on Wheels activities, do some traveling and take a closer look at her ‘Bucket List’ of things she wants to do.
