Have you made your New Year’s Resolutions?

January is walk your dog month, so here’s an easy way to start the year. Here are a few tips when it comes to taking man’s best friend out for a journey around the neighborhood that every family should know about.
1. Get a Front Clip Harness. One of the main issues that new dog owners face is how to walk a dog that pulls on the leash. Therefore, a front clip harness and leash is recommended. It pulls your dog from the front and your dog won’t fight against it. Using this along with one of the many comfortable clip harnesses on the market is the best combo for dog walking.
2. Walking a Puppy. If you get a puppy, it’s important that you know how far to walk it. Puppies can’t be walked very far, no matter what the breed. Twenty minutes is the maximum they should be out for at first. This can gradually build up as your pup gets older and matures.
3. Stick to a Routine. While your dog gets used to walking with you, it’s a good idea to stick to a routine. This means, walking them at the same times of day, and to the same places. This will help them to learn how they are expected to behave and will behave the same way when they are introduced to new parks.
4. Make Sure Your Dog has an ID Tag. One of the most important dog walking tips is to have your dog licensed and micro-chipped. This will ensure that if your pet wanders off or gets lost, their microchip information will bring them back to you.
Larimer Humane Society can assist you with all of your licensing questions concerning your animal. Judy Calhoun is the Executive Director for Larimer Humane Society in Loveland. See more info at www.larimerhumane.org.
