Combating Social Isolation

Have you noticed an increase in not being able to sleep, loss of appetite, feeling more irritable, lonely, tearful, sad, hopeless, fearful, losing motivation or interest in things you normally enjoyed? Chances are you may be experiencing depression, anxiety, and social isolation. These feelings are more common than realized; please know you are not alone.

Older adults have a higher vulnerability for social isolation, depression, and anxiety because of aging-related life transitions, physical changes, and societal views. Quarantines and physical distancing orders have interrupted life as we knew it. Our risk of experiencing depression and anxiety has significantly increased, especially for older adults who are now more isolated from the people, places, and services utilized for support and companionship.

Depression and anxiety can look different for everyone. But please know you are not and do not have to walk this journey alone. Meaningful interaction and connection are important to the physical and mental health of us all.

Being protective of your health while still meaningfully connecting is possible. There are many ways you can try to reduce these feelings- reach out by phone or video to family or friends; make eye contact and smile at your neighbor; play music, sing, and dance (even if it is off-key or beat!); watch something that makes you laugh; close your eyes visualizing a wonderful memory; write; learn something new and remember to ‘Breathe’. Most importantly, give yourself grace and share with someone how you are feeling.

A Life Empowered Counseling has expanded our practice to include telephonic and video sessions to help improve access and connectively. We are committed to reducing loneliness, depression, and anxiety through these unprecedented times, while still providing the same empathetic and compassionate care, empowering you to live your best life possible. If you or your loved ones could benefit from additional support, please call 970-800-4251 we would be honored to help empower you on your journey.

Remember: A Life Empowered, Empowers Life. Love, light, and blessings to you all!
